In this article, we will delve into the world of Chinese mythology and explore the fascinating story behind Zhinü's role in traditional marriage customs.
Zhinü: The Heavenly Matchmaker
Zhinü was once a beautiful mortal woman who lived during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE). She was known for her exceptional beauty and her extraordinary talent in weaving silk fabric. One day, she accidentally fell asleep under a mulberry tree while working late at night. When she woke up, she found that she had transformed into an immortal being.
As an immortal, Zhinü became known as the heavenly matchmaker or "Yue Lao" in English translation. According to legend, Yue Lao would use his divine powers to match couples who were destined to be together in their past lives. He believed that every person had a predestined partner somewhere out there waiting for them.
The Legend Begins
One day, Yue Lao decided to test his matchmaking abilities by creating two celestial beings named Chang'e (the Moon Goddess) and Houyi (the Archery God). He hoped that they would fall deeply in love as he had planned for them since birth.
Chang'e was so enchanted by Houyi's bravery and archery skills that she couldn't resist falling head over heels for him. Similarly, Houyi admired Chang'e's beauty and kind heart even more than her celestial charms.
Together They Ruled Heaven
After marrying each other under Yue Lao's guidance, Chang'e became pregnant with twin sons named Xihe and Changsheng. However when they grew up enough to rule heaven alongside their parents,
they betrayed their father by plotting against him instead of following his teachings.
In anger,
Houyi killed both sons but later realized his mistake,
feeling remorseful,
decided not only save chang'e from death but also restored peace between them.
Both returned home after long journey back from hell where souls resided after death.
Together again they ruled heaven once more until eternity ended which caused separation between husband & wife due loss time eventually dying alone on earth
