Wu Cheng'en, also known as Zhou Zhong and Shanyang Shanren, was a renowned Chinese writer of the Ming dynasty. Born in Wujin County, Jiangsu Province (now part of Changzhou City), his ancestral home was in Anhui Province's Quxian District, where his ancestors settled at Gao Dian.
As a prominent figure in Chinese literature, Wu is best known for his novel "Journey to the West," which has become one of China's Four Great Classical Novels. In addition to this work, he also left behind other important writings such as "Shanyang Collected Works" and "Precedents for Spring and Autumn Annals."
The question of who wrote "Journey to the West" has been debated by scholars over time. It wasn't until the research by Qing dynasty scholar Wu Yusheng that Wu Cheng'en was definitively identified as the author. This recognition has since been widely accepted within academic circles.
Despite facing many challenges throughout his life, including failure in civil service examinations and struggles with poverty, Wu remained dedicated to his literary pursuits. His works continue to be celebrated today for their rich storytelling and vivid characters.
In 2004, the government of Jiangsu Province established a memorial hall dedicated to Wu Cheng'en on Mount Tea Garden in Wujin County (now part of Changzhou City) along with an inscribed stone statue at its foot gate entrance to honor him further.
Wu Cheng'en is associated with other historical topics related to literature during both Ming and Qing dynasties among them being considered one of four great authors from these eras: Gu Yanwu; Dongfang Shuo; Feng Menglong; Li Zhi
