Money Bay’s tidal waves are always very big, the tide head is high, and the power of the water is fierce. The people who live by Money Bay are constantly repairing and rebuilding their homes because they have been flooded out so many times. “The Yellow River repairs one yard of gold each day, and Money Bay repairs one yard of silver each day.” This phrase shows how much trouble the tides cause for the people.
At that time, there was a king called King Wuhua who was known as "King Money" for his bravery. He ruled over Hangzhou during his reign and dealt with various matters easily except for repairing the sea walls along the Qiantang River. The Qiantang River has two high tides every 24 hours, making it difficult to repair its sea walls.
One day, King Wuhua heard from his officials that there was a god living in the river who opposed them whenever they tried to repair their sea walls. They told him that this god could only be seen when he rode on white horses at high tide.
King Wuhua decided to take action against this god himself. He gathered an army of archers on August 18th -the birthday of this tidal deity- which happened to be a particularly turbulent time for tides in Money Bay.
On August 18th,
King Wuhua rode into battle on horseback,
his men following close behind.
As they approached,
they were met by a sight unlike anything they had ever seen before: thousands upon thousands of fish swimming through the air,
their scales glistening in sunlight.
The soldiers were awestruck but did not hesitate to follow their leader into battle.
With arrows flying left and right,
the soldiers fought valiantly against these creatures from another world.
In no time at all,
they had defeated them all,
and peace returned once again to Money Bay's shores.
This story has been passed down through generations as proof that even gods can be defeated if you stand up against them.
It also serves as an example of how important it is never give up or lose faith.
And so,
it came about that we call our beautiful bay "Money Bay",
a place where legend tells us brave warriors once stood tall against impossible odds.
May we never forget those brave men
who defended our home
against forces beyond our understanding.
We will remember them forever
