在宋朝时期，契丹军队以二十万之众入侵边境，遂城的防御兵力仅有三千人。杨延昭作为六郎，在遂城坚守一线。当时的遂城，即今徐水县西北二十里的遂城村，与瀑河相望，一道古老的长城连接着两个世界。面对辽兵的猛烈攻击，遂城的人民却显得无比自信，他们告诉六郎：“只要您在此，我们就不怕。”这让杨延昭深感责任重大，他组织全体青壮年，与守军共同抵抗。
天气突变，十月份 suddenly turned cold. Yang Delayingzhao, the sixth son of Yang, saw this situation and came up with a plan. He ordered the people to pour water on the city walls at night, and by morning, the water had frozen into a thick layer of ice. The high city walls became an icy barrier that was both strong and slippery, making it impossible for the enemy to climb.
The soldiers from Song Dynasty hid behind their shields and waited for the enemy to attack. When they did, they were met with a hail of arrows and stones that killed many of them. The Liao army retreated after several days without success in breaching the defenses.
Yang Delayingzhao was promoted by Emperor Zhenzong for his bravery in repelling numerous attacks from Liao forces along their border. He died at age 57 while serving as governor in Mo Prefecture (now Renqiu County) due to illness.
His body was escorted back home by his son Yang Wenguang who served under him during battle.
