在宋朝时期，契丹军队以二十万之众入侵边境，遂城的防御兵力仅有三千人。杨延昭作为六郎，在遂城坚守一线。当时的遂城，即今徐水县西北二十里的遂城村，与瀑河相望，一道古老的长城连接着两个世界。面对辽兵的猛烈攻击，遂城的人民却显得无比自信，他们告诉六郎：“只要您在此，我们就不怕。”这让杨延昭深感责任重大，他组织全体青壮年，与守军共同抵抗。
天气突变，十月份 suddenly turned cold. Yang Delayingzhao, the sixth son of Yang, saw this and came up with a plan. He ordered the soldiers to pour water on the city walls at night, which quickly froze into a thick layer of ice. The next morning, when the enemy attacked again, they found that the icy walls were both slippery and hard to climb. The soldiers inside took advantage of this opportunity to roll logs and hurl stones down on their attackers.
The enemy retreated after several days without success in breaching the defenses. Yang Delayingzhao led his troops out to pursue them and inflicted heavy losses upon them before returning victorious.
Yang Delayingzhao was promoted for his bravery in repelling multiple invasions by Jurchen forces during his tenure as Military Commissioner at Mo Prefecture (now Renqiu County).
