villagers once claimed that the clock was so massive that three sturdy bamboo poles tied together couldn't reach its bottom. Although it's not as deep now, during droughts, the outline of the clock can still be seen.
Legend has it that in ancient times, there stood a small temple on the site where the clock now lies. The temple had only two rooms: one housed a deity's altar dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva; and another room served as a residence for an and尚 named Hongneng. Despite being small and remote with scarce resources, Hongneng remained resolute in his devotion to maintaining the temple's rituals.
One day, Hongneng received a divine revelation from South Sea Goddess of Mercy herself, promising to send him an enormous bell on June 6th if he kept his door open until midnight. However, when darkness fell without any sign of deliverance, Hongneng succumbed to sleepiness and closed the door prematurely. Just then, thunderous winds shook the land as dark clouds enveloped everything like nightfall; lightning illuminated flashes before vanishing into blackness.
The sound of creaking doors echoed through wind gusts followed by an explosion-like thud—a colossal bronze bell landed beside him with half buried in ground level! Awe-struck upon realizing his mistake—the consequences—Hongneng wished he could turn back time.
