Mythic Tales of Old China A Journey Through the Ag
In the vast expanse of Chinese history, there lies a treasure trove of mythic tales that have been passed down through generations. These stories are not just mere fables but hold significant cultural and historical value, offering a glimpse into the beliefs, values and way of life of our ancestors.
One such story is that of Pangu, the creator god who emerged from an egg to create the world. According to legend, Pangu was born from a cosmic egg that contained all matter in the universe. As he grew inside this egg, he separated himself from yin and yang forces - representing darkness and light respectively - which eventually formed heaven and earth. This creation myth symbolizes order out of chaos and reflects China's reverence for nature.
Another famous tale is about Chang'e who became immortal after consuming elixir given by Hou Yi, her husband. Their love story takes us back to ancient times when archery was revered as an art form. The moon goddess Chang'e would return to Earth every 15th day during lunar eclipses where she would drink more elixir causing her footprints on Moon's surface called "Chang'e Crater".
The Monkey King Sun Wukong is another popular figure known for his mischievous behavior in one epic journey around Mount Tai with his companions Tang Sanzang (a Buddhist monk), Zhu Bajie (a pig demon) & Sha Wujing (a water buffalo). The novel tells how they embark on their pilgrimage to India seeking sacred scriptures while facing numerous challenges along their path.
The Eight Immortals are also celebrated figures in Chinese mythology who achieved immortality through various means like practicing Taoist meditation or eating magical peaches & drinking ambrosia wine. They embody different virtues such as filial piety or loyalty reflecting core Confucian teachings.
