Wu Mengju replied with a smile, "Please tell me, are you Lü Dongbin?" The beggar replied, "Where did this come from?" Wu Mengju pointed to the copper coin in the beggar's mouth and said, "The copper coin is held between the lips and forms a 'Lü' shape." The beggar then wrote a poem on the railing of the bridge using his bamboo cane:
"I have lived in Suzhou for many years,
No one knows that I am an immortal,
Only Wu Mengju knows that I am not destined to be with him,
Immortals love simplicity and poverty,
Do not covet officialdom or wealth."
After reading the poem, Wu Mengju was convinced that he had indeed met Lü Dongbin. He returned home and pondered over Lü's words. He realized that he had been too focused on wealth and status, neglecting simplicity. Soon after, Wu Mengju followed Lü's advice and resigned from his official position. He returned to his hometown of Zhouquan village where he distributed his property among his neighbors and lived a simple life as an author until his death.
According to legend when someone later desecrated Wu Mengju's tomb there was no valuable items found within it proving that he had indeed led a life of simplicity after following Lü Dongbin's teachings.
