在清朝乾隆年间，有个读书人吴孟举，是浙江石门县洲泉人。他家底富厚，拥有良田千亩，又官至内阁中书，可以说既有荣华，又有富贵，唯独缺少了一样，就是长生不老的仙术。吴孟举听闻苏州民间以四月初八为“神仙节”，传言每年这一天，天上神仙都要下凡一游，察看人间世故。人们都想亲眼见到神通广大的仙人，所以四月初八这天，整个苏州总是热闹非凡。
然而，从未有人真的在这一天见过真正的神仙，只有用当地一句俗语：“见仙不识仙，富贵三千年”来取个吉利罢了。但吴孟举并不因此而灰心，他要到苏州碰碰额头上的运气。这年四月初八，吴孟举早到了苏州，不带红伞，也不坐蓝轿，只带了四个亲兵，一兴冲冲地上街凑热闹。这天满街路摆满了各式各样的货摊，还有打拳头卖膏药、敲搭板唱“莲花落”等卖艺人。轧闹的人川流不息，这真是个热闹的神仙节。
吴孟举没心思欣赏这些热闹景致，而是留心观察来往行人的神态举止，用以辨认非凡之人。他的眼睛盯牢看，那脑筋骨碌碌转忽然心头一亮，他急忙上前，对着一个衣衫褴褛的叫化子深深作了一揖。那叫化子嘴里衔着一枚铜钿，以呼吸声发出“嘘、嘘”的声音。被这个模样所吸引的是不是有点类似于他自己？
Wu Mengju, a scholar from Songjiang, Zhejiang Province in the Qing dynasty. He owned vast lands and was a middle-ranking official in the Ministry of Personnel. However, he felt that his life lacked something important - immortality. On April 8th every year, people would celebrate "Gods' Day" by visiting temples and seeking blessings from gods.
Wu Mengju heard about this tradition and decided to go to Suzhou on that day to see if he could meet any immortal beings. As he walked through the bustling streets filled with vendors selling all sorts of goods, Wu Mengju kept an eye out for anyone who might be extraordinary.
One day in early spring when the apricot blossoms were still blooming outside my door,
I went out with my four loyal guards to enjoy the festive atmosphere of Gods' Day.
The streets were filled with people dressed up as various characters from Chinese mythology,
and street performers doing acrobatics or singing folk songs.
As I strolled along the banks of West Lake,
I noticed an old man sitting under a willow tree playing a zither.
His music was so beautiful that it brought tears to my eyes,
and I knew right then that I had found what I was looking for - immortality.
The old man looked at me with kind eyes and said,"You must be very lucky indeed."
I asked him how he became immortal,
and he replied,"It is not just luck but also hard work and dedication."
He told me that immortals are not born but made through their own efforts over many lifetimes.
From then on, Wu Mengju devoted himself to his studies and writings.
He wrote several books including "A Collection of Poems From Various Dynasties"
which became famous throughout China
and earned him great respect among scholars.
