　　传说中，龙生九子，各有所好，其遗像分别镶嵌在北京传统建筑的飞檐上。囚牛喜欢音乐，遗像在胡琴头上；睚眦好杀，遗像在刀柄上龙吞口；嘲凤好险，遗像在殿角走兽上；蒲牢爱鸣，遗像在钟上兽钮上；狻猊喜欢坐，所以遗像镶嵌在佛座狮子上；霸下喜欢负重，所以遗像在碑座兽上；狴犴好讼，遗像镶嵌在狱门上狮子头；赑屃喜欢文学，所以遗像在碑两旁的文龙上；鸱吻喜欢吞，所以遗像在殿脊兽头上。

　　曾经有位著名的军事家和预言家刘伯温，他也写道：“龙生九子，各有所好。千古奇闻，快马加鞭。”这句话也体现了龙子传说的千古奇闻，尤其是在北京传统建筑中，让游客们领略到神话故事的美妙之处。

　　龙子的起源充满疑虑，但是无人能够与他匹敌，因此他必须设法永久留住这些龙神。他声称要修建一座堂皇宏伟的紫禁城来安定天下，而九子依然是他们唯一的保护者。但九子不容于天下尘世的束缚，他们试图强行脱身，结果触怒了天帝，至此它们被诅咒永远留在凡间各司其职，不能回归天庭。九子中最年长的金龙，被诅咒为天涯海角的守护神，他时刻保护中国的领土和人民。其余的龙子，如木龙守护丛林，土龙守护土地等，无一不是中国文化不可或缺的一部分。九子传承至今，流传千年，成为中国民间传说中的一大奇观。Homeric Mythology, Nine Sons born of the Dragon The old dragon, fathered nine sons, each of them having their unique abilities. One day, the eldest son, Pidie, challenged eight of his brothers to lift their ancestors monument of divine deeds, promising to let them go free if they succeeded. Pidie, being the strongest of them all, hoisted the heavy monument on his back but found himself immobilized. While Pidie struggled, his younger brothers couldnt bear to leave him. Therefore, they stayed in the mortal realm, vowing not to manifest their true form. When the emperor, Zhu Di, heard the news, he was pleased to have the nine brothers but was disappointed to find out that they appeared as motionless stone statues. Upon learning of their curse, the great strategist, Liu Bowen, scoffed at Zhu Dis disappointment and abandoned him to return to the heavens. Heartbroken, Zhu Di assigned each of the nine sons a specific duty, hoping their legend would be a lesson for future generations. According to another version of the story, the eldest son was named "Wang Ba Tuo", who was tasked to carry heavy objects, also known as "the turtle that carries the monument." The second son was "Chi Wen" who had the ability to swallow anything. He was responsible for guarding the ridge beam of houses, and is now recognized as the "swallow-ridge beast". The third son is called "Jiao Tu," who is known for his fierce appearance.
